Exercise Over Forty
Well here it is another week, another Monday!
After dropping the kids off at school this morning, my day started with a trip to my new best friend my Chiropractor.
I’ve been seeing him for a couple of weeks now & I honestly am feeling the best I have in a long time. And I mean that emotionally.
Is that weird? Could someone realigning your spine actually make you feel better on the inside?
Apparently yes. Something to do with your nervous system running down your spine, so no pressure on your nervous system = no pressure on your emotions! Maybe?
Anyway, I went to see him on the advice of my Mum who also sees him, after I complained of having a sore lower back that wasn’t shifting after two weeks. The Chiro sent me off for some x-rays. To make a long story short, and to be honest this stuff goes in one ear with me & out the other, I have some bone spurs on my spine, which is a sign of spine degeneration. Nothing to worry about ät my age”, but something that should be dealt with to stop it getting any worse. Twice a week visits to the Chiro for a couple of months & a lot of bone crunching – ouch. Doesn’t feel so hot at the time, but like I said, I’m feeling pretty damn good about it all afterwards. Glad my private health cover is getting put to some use too! 😉
More weighted exercise for me & looking at keeping more movement in my spine from now on, whether that’s at my desk, on the couch or watching the kids play sport from the sidelines. Little changes, but hopefully ones that will help me in the long term.
Luckily I’ve already been going to a HIIT45 class at my local Women’s Only gym – Active Body Fitness – which is just down the road from me. It’s a kind of Boot Camp I guess, you try & do as many reps as you can on each circuit activity in the time frame.
My class is only 45 minutes, it’s over before I have the chance to get bored & it’s full of mums I know from school. Not intimidating, not boring & not stressful. Having someone cheer you on & motivate you is wonderful too – there is no way I am self motivated enough to go the gym & work out on my own!
It’s still a struggle to drag my sorry arse down there twice a week, but I’m doing it. And now I know my spine needs it as much as the rest of me, I’m finding it even more of a priority to get there.
I have never enjoyed exercising, I’ve never done it for fun. In fact, I’ve never really done it at all.
But look at me now! It’s only taken me to the ripe old age of 43 to get my shit together. Two mornings at the gym, teamed with a class of Reformer Pilates at Proactive Pilates, a couple of half hour walks (head phones on so I can shut my brain off) & I’m actually feeling pretty good about myself.
So, if I’m going to exercise I need the right gear – no more worn out trackies & over sized pyjama worthy tees!
Went all out & bought myself some new tights & kicks! Now I’m raring to go! Just remind me of that at 6am tomorrow morning when my alarm goes off to get up & go to the gym……
