Varnish on King

August 12, 2014

I’m no restaurant reviewer, the highlight of my eating out each week is generally the local sushi train with my kids, but luckily once a month I get to eat out with my WAGS & venture a little further afield!

This week we visited Varnish on King, located in the basement of Smithmore House on King Street in the Perth CBD.  It’s owned by Andy Freeman of Luxe Bar fame, so I was expecting good things!

I liked the entry straight away.  It reminded me of the old secret speakeasies in the prohibition days.  There is no obvious signage just the street number & a big wooden door leading you down to the basement via a very cool staircase lined with bottles of wine to the bar & restaurant below.

It reminded me of places we’d eaten in New York, basement location & a pared back, industrial warehouse vibe.
Cool but classy & cosy.  Great work Perth!

Varnish is essentially a whiskey bar with over 200 whiskeys, ryes & bourbons.  How about a Pickleback?  A shot of whiskey followed up with some pickled goodies!  Definitely a place to come back & have some fun with our boys!

Our waitress was super helpful in helping us choose our wine & then suggested she order off the menu for us.  The food is great for sharing & we loved everything we tried.

And purely 80s tunes!  We were singing along all night!

The place was packed on a Thursday night, so I imagine a weekend could get a little crazy, but I would highly recommend a mid-week date night dinner here.  Hmmm, might have to check my diary!

Some of the delicious bits we tasted were:

Fried chicken wings with popcorn & buttermilk dressing

Tater tots with chipotle hot sauce

Mac & Cheese with bone marrow & spec

Split Cajun prawns with lemon & avruga

Cured Esperance scallops with smoked mussel, cucumber & salmon roe

Catalan rice pudding with truffle & honeycomb

Valrhona chocolate tart
